Dear Class of 2028,

We have received a number of questions regarding what to know for the pathology of infectious disease lecture.

Things to know:

? Classes of pathogens: prions, viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and metazoa (helminths and ectoparasites)

? Approach to pathological diagnosis, mechanisms of microbial injury, and techniques for identifying infectious agents

? Pathological patterns and spectrum of inflammatory responses produced by different pathogens

     * Tissue reaction pattern (the lesion) and the pathogen that may be responsible

In short, would you be able to visually identify and/or verbally describe typical lesions produced by prions, viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and metazoa (helminths and ectoparasites)?

Although deep knowledge on specific pathogens is not needed, knowledge of pathogen name and class in which it belongs (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus-bacteria, Molluscum contagiosum-virus, Cryptococcus neoformans-fungus), would assist in being able to correctly identify the answer. Similarly, knowledge of techniques for identifying pathogens (e.g. special stains) would also facilitate this.

Hope this helps.

All the best,

-Pathology Department
