Classes of 2026 and 2027:
I hope everyone’s 2026 is off to a great start and that rotations are going well.
As you continue through the year, Clinical Affairs wanted to provide the following reminders to help you get the most out of your rotations:
· On the first day, please introduce yourselves and specify your level of training to your precepting residents and attendings. It is very helpful for preceptors to learn where you are in your training so they can plan their teaching with you in a way that takes into account your experience and goals.
· Be proactive in learning preceptors’ expectations. Every rotation site is different, and every preceptor is different. A conversation on the first day of your rotation can go a long way to set mutual expectations regarding your daily schedule, patient load, and other responsibilities. Setting expectations early can also avoid any miscommunication and help improve your performance.
· Share with your preceptors the Top 20 lists/Top 10 lists of diagnoses/clinical problems found in the back of your rotation syllabi. These lists can help you and your preceptors frame your learning over a rotation to ensure that you cover all you need to learn through direct patient care, bedside teaching, weekly didactics or independent study.
· Ask preceptors for feedback early and regularly on your rotations. Informal feedback during the first week, mid-rotation feedback and formal feedback at the end of a rotation allow you and your preceptor to track the growth in your knowledge and clinical skills. Preceptors in all our campuses are volunteers: they are there to teach because they want to teach. Your preceptors expect to be asked about feedback, so I encourage you to have those conversations to have the best experiences on rotations.
Please let Clinical Affairs know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Work hard and have fun caring for patients and learning!
