Hi Class of 2027/28!
Congratulations on making it to Block 4/8! SAAO is hosting a Drug Take Back program for DO Day of Service from 3/31/2025 - 4/12/2025, just before DEA Take Back Day on 4/26/25. Please bring unused medications from yourself or on behalf of a consenting friend or family member from the Accepted List below to our station located in Leon Levine Hall.
While we tend not to think much about our unused medicines, but here is an excerpt from an article <https://www.ajpmonline.org/article/S0749-3797(09)00389-4/fulltext> published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine outlining the importance of properly storing and disposing of medicaitons:
“Based on 3034 cases, an estimated 71,224 emergency department visits for medication overdoses were made annually by children aged ≤18 years, representing 68.9% of emergency department visits for unintentional pediatric poisonings. The rate of unintentional poisonings from medications was twice the rate of those from nonpharmaceutical consumer products. Four fifths (82.2%) of visits for medication overdoses were from unsupervised ingestions (children accessing medications on their own).”
In 2017, a Consumer Reports survey<https://www.consumerreports.org/drug-safety/the-problem-with-expired-medication/> reported that 33% of Americans haven't cleaned out their medicine cabinet in the last year, and 20% haven’t cleaned it out in the last 3 years. As future Osteopathic physicians, we are committed to providing the best care to our communities, and one way we can do that is by safely discarding unused or expired medications. Please consider collecting acceptable medications for disposal from any and all family members, church members, and friends.
Donation is worth 2 TOUCH hours with a QR code present at the station purely to note you have donated and what we should expect to find in the donation with no assumption of who’s medication it is. We ask that you use the Sharpies provided to block out any identifying information, but keep the medicine in as close to the original packaging as possible. Brown bags and a stapler will also be available to increase anonymity, especially for medicines that are not as easy to return.
Below are a list of acceptable and unacceptable medications (obtained from CVS):
Accepted:
Prescription medications (Scheduled II through V Controlled and Non-Controlled), in original packaging if possible
Over-the-counter medications, in original packaging if possible
Liquid medicine bottles less than 4 ounces in a resealable plastic bag
Not accepted:
Illegal (Schedule I) drugs
Needles/syringes or sharp containers
Medical devices, batteries
Aerosol cans, inhalers
Chemicals
Mercury-containing devices
Please reach out if you have any questions. Thank you for helping to keep our community safe!
Good luck with this block and we'll see you soon!
