Dear CUSOM Classes of 2025, 2026, 2027, and 2028,
It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that I share the bittersweet news that Dr. Elizabeth Gignac will be leaving CUSOM to serve as the Inaugural Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills Development at the newly established Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine. In her new role, she will develop and lead the school’s clinical skills, standardized patient, point-of-care ultrasound, and simulation training programs.
Dr. Gignac joined CUSOM in 2020 as Chair of Emergency Medicine and, in recognition of her outstanding contributions as a mentor and educator, she was appointed to Chair of Simulation and Clinical Education in 2021, a role she has held concurrently with the Chair of Emergency Medicine. Over the past four years, Dr. Gignac’s positive impact on CUSOM and our students has been significant. Her leadership, work ethic, and solution-focused approach, alongside the invaluable contributions of our SIM Center faculty and staff, have fostered curricular innovation and enhanced the center’s operational efficiency and effectiveness. Above all, Dr. Gignac is a gifted teacher and a compassionate mentor who has profoundly influenced the lives of countless students, preparing them to excel as the next generation of osteopathic physicians.
While Dr. Gignac will continue to serve in her current roles until February 14th, transitional planning is already well underway, including identifying her successors for both the Chair of Emergency Medicine and Chair of Simulation and Clinical Education. And while she will be greatly missed, CUSOM is fortunate to have such an exceptional SIM Center team of leaders, faculty and staff who are extremely well-equipped, committed, and prepared to continue advancing the standards of excellence that have come to define the Center.
Working with Dr. Gignac over the past 4 years has been a true joy. While I am saddened to see her go, I’m genuinely happy for her and the exciting opportunities that await her in this new role. I’m also comforted by the fact that she will be just “down the road” and I look forward to continuing to collaborate with her in our shared dedication to medical education.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Gignac on this well-deserved opportunity and expressing our heartfelt appreciation for her contributions and service to our entire CUSOM family!
Thank you all and best wishes to you and yours for a wonderful holiday season and a joyous new year!

Dr. P
