If you expressed interest in the surgery summer project, you should have received this announcement, but just to be sure, here it is.
Dear MS1 students interested in the summer surgery research opportunity,
This project is at ECU in the Department of Surgery. (Please don't reach out to the department yourself. We have cultivated this research experience over the years, and if they are overwhelmed with applicants in a disorganized way, it could adversely affect their interest in CUSOM students.)
The surgical research program has an interest in 3 areas: Bariatrics, Trauma, and Transplant. It is unclear if the student will work on just one or all 3 areas.
The program is designed to give students a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced surgical researchers and clinicians to investigate important questions in these specialties. Students will have opportunities to present and (hopefully ) publish their work.
The program starts mid-May, so there will be paperwork and background work that will need to be completed before then. The students will be identified by early May.
Students will be expected to work in person at the ECU Health Medical Center and the ECU Brody School of Medine for at least 3 days per week during the summer. We are considering housing opportunities, but we cannot guarantee housing availability. It looks like a 90-minute drive from here. Participation may not be realistic for some students.
Most projects will continue into the 2nd and 3rd year but are likely to be more remote rather than in-person at that point.
To be considered for the program, students must have completed the first year of medical school and have a strong interest in surgical research. Previous research experience is not required.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please express your interest by completing the Qualtrics survey (the link is included below), which will ask for your contact information, a copy of your CV, and a research interest statement. Please complete the survey by noon on April 22.
The survey will give you a summary of your answers at the end. I encourage you to save a pdf copy of your submission.
Dr. Baright and Dr. Hamrick will review all candidates and refer 6-8 students to the ECU team to consider for the 2 positions for this summer. We are aiming to have those students referred to ECU by late April.
For consideration, Dr. Baright has considerable experience evaluating students with regard to the field of surgery and will be looking at surgery interests. Dr. Hamrick will be looking for students who express research interest and can articulate why research is meaningful/important to them. We will not be examining GPA or specific academic achievements; however, students should be academically strong in that they haven't failed courses, and do not have any professionalism issues.

Reminder: complete the survey by noon on April 22
