Dear MS 1 students,
If you have a particular interest in hematology and hematology research and identify as a minority student, please consider this ASH Minority Medical Student Award program.
For a student at your level of training, you would probably apply for the summer research opportunity, but could also consider a year-long project which would require taking a year off of medical school. This award comes with a stipend, the amount of which varies with the length-the full year includes a living stipend and benefits, etc.
This is a highly competitive award, so consider the strength of your application. Part of the application is a statement about interest in hematology and commitment to research and/or health disparities. The application package requires a letter from CUSOM, so reach out to me to discuss (I don't have to be the one to write the letter but we should talk about your application). This application also requires a research mentor, who is identified before the application. CUSOM doesn't have much in the way of hematology research, but the ASH program includes a mechanism to request assistance in finding a mentor, and with UNC and Duke nearby, I think it would be possible to find a mentor in the area. The timeline is tight to find a mentor-the original mentor request deadline was 10/15, but I just got notification that deadline was extended to 10/30.
