Subject: AMA Resolution Email

Good afternoon. This email comes from the national Christian Medical and Dental Associations. Please consider making your voice heard concerning your opinion on the issue at hand.

The student, resident and fellow sections of the American Medical Association (AMA) have proposed two resolutions (listed below) that would change all existing AMA policies against physician-assisted suicide. The AMA is accepting comments and in-person/virtual testimony from their members on these two resolutions until Sunday, October 29, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. CT. Click here<https://www.ama-assn.org/forums/house-delegates/ref-comm-amendments-and-bylaws/resolutions> to submit your comments (you will need to register first). The AMA especially needs to hear from students, residents and graduate professionals. From there, the comments will be reviewed by the Reference Committee. AMA members can also testify in-person against both resolutions during the Reference Committee Meeting being held on Saturday, November 11, 2023 from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Voting will occur a few days after this meeting. Those testifying in person will have two minutes maximum (prepare for 90 seconds) to speak.

You can register for the meeting here: 2023 Interim Meeting of the AMA House of Delegates | American Medical Association (ama-assn.org)<https://www.ama-assn.org/about/events/2023-interim-meeting-ama-house-delegates>

The American Medical Association currently states, "Physician-assisted suicide is fundamentally incompatible with the physician's role as healer, would be difficult or impossible to control, and would pose serious societal risks."

Two resolutions have been proposed for consideration, comment and an eventual vote that seek to change and normalize this long-held view of the AMA on assisted suicide. The two resolutions are as follows:

  1. AMA Resolution i23-004 “Reconsideration of Medical Aid in Dying (MAID)”<http://cmda.informz.net/z/cjUucD9taT00MDM2OTY1JnA9MSZ1PTQyODg4NjgxMiZsaT00MzM5Mzc0Nw/index.html> (put forward by the AMA’s student section) asks the AMA to no longer refer to assisted suicide as “physician-assisted suicide” but instead refer to it as “medical aid-in-dying” (MAID) and decriminalize physicians and healthcare professionals who engage in MAID.
  2. AMA Resolution i23-005 “Adopting a Neutral Stance on Medical Aid in Dying”<https://www.ama-assn.org/system/files/i23-005.pdf> (put forward by the AMA resident and fellow section) asks the AMA to adopt a neutral stance on assisted suicide—moving away from its long-held opposed position.
Again, if you wish to voice your opinion, you must register and make your comments by October 29. AMA membership fee for students is $20 and a limited sponsorship from CMDA is being provided to help offset membership costs for those willing to testify. Please contact the CMDA Director of State Public Policy Nicole Hayes at nicole.hayes at cmda.org<mailto:nicole.hayes at cmda.org> if you are interested. Thank you.
