SESSION DETAILS:
Session One Title: We Can't Afford to Burnout; The Urgent Need to Prioritize a Culture of Well-being in Ourselves and Our Systems, Dr. Catherine Florio Pipas (9am-11:15am)
Session Objectives:

  1.  Define well-being and its importance in health professionals
  2.  Describe characteristics, prevalence, and impact of burnout on learners, physicians, their teams, systems, and patients
  3.  Classify individual and institutional factors that contribute to a lack of wellbeing in all health professionals
  4.  Create a Personal Health Improvement Plan (PHIP)
  5.  Apply National Recommendations to Advance Institutional Wellbeing
Session Description: The wellbeing of health professionals is critical to their own effectiveness as well as the health of the population. This session will benefit all those committed to personal and institutional wellbeing. Participants will preview national literature and reflect on their own and their organization's wellbeing efforts. Participants will increase knowledge and skills on best practices and resources needed to build measurable and meaningful changes that support students, residents, faculty, and administrators in medicine. Attendees will have the opportunity to apply recommendations to advance their own and their systems wellbeing.

Presenter Bio: Dr. Pipas is Professor, Community & Family Medicine, The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI) and Dept of Medical Education, Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She has been recognized as a passionate leader in education, research and clinical care with awards including: 2019 STFM Humanism in Medicine Award, the 2019 Family Medicine Education Consortium "This We Believe" Award on "Caring for Me- Caring for You," the 2017, 2018 and 2019 New Hampshire Top Doctor, Dartmouth Medical School Master Educator, AOA Honor Society, and Dartmouth Clinical Teacher of the Year. She is author of A Doctor's Dozen: 12 Strategies for Personal Health and a Culture of Wellness.
Dr. Pipas is Co- Chair of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Leading Physician Well-being Program and serves as Chair of the AAFP Physician Health First initiative.  She is on the Administrative Board of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Council of Faculty and Academic Societies and Chairs the CFAS Faculty Resilience Committee. Dr. Pipas serves as the Chief Wellness Officer for CaseNetwork, overseeing the design, implementation, and assessment of CoreWellness and their Learning & Research Collaborative.
She graduated Jefferson Medical College, and completed residency at Medical University of South Carolina, Faculty Development Fellowship at UNC- Chapel Hill and an MPH at TDI. She directs the Longitudinal Leadership Curriculum at Dartmouth School of Medicine. Over the last 28 years, she has served as Assistant Dean, Vice Chair, Chief Clinical Officer, and Director of the Office of Community-Based Education and Research and Director of Dartmouth's Regional Primary Care Center. She is a Past President of the New Hampshire Academy of Science, and has served on the STFM Board of Directors, the NHAFP Board and the NH Board of Medicine and the Board of Trustees of Kimball Union Academy. She was a Founding Faculty for STFM's Medical Student Educators Development Institute and has contributed to the STFM Leading Change Course, the AAMC National LEAD Certificate Program and the ACGME FM Milestones Project.

Dr. Pipas speaks, consults, coaches, and collaborates locally, nationally, and globally with individuals as well as medical schools, residency programs, and healthcare organizations to advance personal and institutional wellbeing.





Session Two Title: Medical Student, Resident, Physician Wellbeing Panel Discussion



Session Description: The panel will address issues related to wellness/wellbeing and burnout in medical school, residency, and after. Time will be reserved for questions from the audience.

Current BH Club Members: $5.00
Students (non BH club members): $10.00
Residents: $15.00
Faculty/Attending Physicians/Licensed Physician Assistants: $20.00
*Registration fees will go directly toward the costs of this event and support future CUSOM Behavioral Health Club events.
