Good afternoon,

I hope your semester is off to a great start! This is a friendly reminder that Mock Trial Team tryouts begin on Saturday, August 20th. We have some spots still available, and I encourage you to sign up. I am extending the deadline for applications until Friday, August 16th at 3 pm. If you are interested in trying out, or have already signed up for a time slot, please send your application materials as soon as possible.

Formal tryouts for the Campbell Law Mock Trial Team are scheduled for Saturday, August 19th (morning and afternoon) and Sunday August 20th (afternoon), and Tuesday, August 22nd (evening) Tryouts are open to all 2L and 3L students. Please use this link to sign up for a try out slot: https://calendly.com/campbelllawcompetitivead/mock-trial-team-tryouts.

If you have any questions or are unsure if you wish to try out, please come talk to me. My office is on the third floor in the Advocacy Suite.

When I was a student here, I participated in multiple mock trial competitions. It was one of my favorite experiences at Campbell Law School. I formed lifelong friendships with my trial partners and teammates. I received invaluable instruction from professors, coaches, and practicing attorneys. Most importantly, I became comfortable and effective in a courtroom which prepared me to be a zealous advocate and represent my clients as a practicing attorney.

I hope that you will consider taking advantage of the opportunities competing on our mock trial team (or any of our competitive programs) while you have the chance during your time at Campbell Law School.

Best regards,

2L & 3L Students,

Campbell Law School will be competing in a host of mock trial competitions throughout the country this year. Last year our teams competed in California, Colorado, Florida, New York, Puerto Rico, Texas, and Washington, D.C.. Our teams won three regional championships and placed nationally in multiple competitions. Along the way, many of our advocates won individual awards for their stellar courtroom advocacy. While we have enjoyed past success, we are anxious to identify the next group of outstanding trial advocates to build on our winning tradition.

Interested advocates must prepare a five-minute closing argument from the case NITA Liquor Commission v. Jones, et al. I have attached a copy of the case file for your convenience. You may choose to represent either side of the case. Both have equally strong arguments. All students interested in participating in mock trial competitions must tryout regardless of prior advocacy experience. Former participants are not guaranteed a position on the team nor an assignment to any particular competition.

We recognize that all of the 2L class, and many from the 3L class, have not had Trial Advocacy and most likely have no formal training in preparing or delivering a closing argument. Do not let that dissuade you from participating in tryouts. Other than being in your 2L or 3L year, there are no prerequisites for participating on the Campbell Law Mock Trial Team. In fact, most of the participants chosen in the past have had no experience whatsoever. We evaluate candidates based on a number of factors in determining who may be the most capable, dedicated advocates - so just focus on presenting your best five-minute argument.

Also attached is the Mock Trial Team Tryout Application. Once you have completed your application, please scan your tryout application, your resume, your class schedule, then work schedule (if applicable) in that order. These materials should be emailed to: matney at campbell.edu<mailto:matney at campbell.edu> and mhealy at campbell.edu<mailto:mhealy at campbell.edu> by Wednesday, August 16, 2023.

Finally, please do not feel compelled to tryout simply because you are receiving this correspondence. We are interested in advocates who strongly desire to participate in courtroom trial competitions and are prepared to do the work necessary to be successful. Our team success is a product of hard work and talent. Neither alone is sufficient. I am immensely proud of our past accomplishments; I'm equally excited about our future.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
